DESIGN suggestions

Disclaimer: The below information offered by Windstone Graphics & Printing™ are merely suggestions to assist you in creating your own art. By using these suggestions, you agree not to hold Windstone Graphics & Printing™ or its affiliates liable for artwork that you created and deemed incorrect before or after it has been printed. Even though suggestions are given below, all suggested rules may be broken if the rules do not work with your artwork design.

Leave Ample Margin.
Margin is the space between the outer edge of text or image(s) and outer edge of the product.
Margin for Business Card Size: A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 1/8th inch minimal to 1/4 inch maximum from text or image edge to the edge of the paper where the card will be cut to size.
Margin for Postcard Size: A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 1/4 inch minimal to 1/2 inch maximum from text or image edge to the edge of the paper where the card will be cut to size.
Margin for Letterhead Size: A good rule of thumb is to leave at least 3/8th inch minimal to 1/2 inch maximum from text or image edge to the edge of the paper where the card will be cut to size.

Align your Art and Text Elements in a Grid. Grid lines can be created from edges of text, images, or text and images. For example, if a block of text is on the left side of the page and an image is also on the left side, if possible, create an invisible grid line between the two elements and align the left edge of the text with the left edge of the image.

Maintain Ample White Space. White space is the space that is not taken up by images or text. It is the empty space that frames the art or text elements that you want to emphasize. Try to keep your text short and to the point and images minimal. It is important that all the elements in your graphic design are viewed, but if too many elements are crammed together or if the text is too small and hard to read, the graphic design becomes cluttered and loses its ability to have a good impact on its viewer. That is why it is good to be aware of the white space around the art and text elements and remember to make sure it is spacious enough to frame what you want to emphasize.

Be Aware of Contrast and Color. When setting text over images or over color blocks, make sure the text is visible and does not blend into the background image or color. It is best to set text against a contrasting color or image. Sometimes images have too much contrast and no color really works well when printed over them. You may need to select a different image behind the text or a different text color to make the text more visible. Sometimes enlarging the text size helps to set the text aside from its background element.

Font Sizes. It is good to very your font sizes to emphasize various features. Make important information largest and scale down from there. Typically, we at Windstone Graphics & Printing™ set the main body font size to be 10pt because it is easy to read and is still small enough to not take up too much room. If we have too much text and cannot dwindle it down, we may go as small as 9pt or 8pt, but really shy away from anything smaller. The smaller the font size, the harder it is for viewers to read, and the more risk you run of the ink plugging up the letters and numbers. We may set headers to be anywhere from 14pt to 24pt, but it really depends on the product size. Even though font sizes as small as 5pt can be printed, 5pt is really hard to read by most viewers.
